Contact and Communication
Contact is how we meet what’s here—ourselves, one another, and the environment—with openness and time.
In practice we distinguish self-expression from communication. Self-expression lets breath, sound, movement, and words emerge from inner experience without managing impact; it can include discharge, sorting mixed feelings, and exploring taboo expression. Communication is speaking so the other can receive it—we aim to be heard, track the other’s capacity, and shape our language accordingly.
Dealing well with reactivity—ours and others’—matters. Getting clear about our expectations often reveals what’s fueling the reaction and resets the conversation.
The basic moves stay simple: show up, turn toward, offer time and space, meet with breath.
We speak for ourselves, check impact (“when I say this, what are you noticing?”), listen as fully as we speak, and pause. The aim isn’t performance or fixing; it’s real contact that supports choice and communication.
